Land Art in the City
On Sunday, September 7, 2025, Land Art in the City will be on display in the center of Almere, a presentation of the winning proposals from the Open Call Land Art in the City. The works can be seen on and around the Esplanade, the square on the Weerwater, Almere's city lake.
Until May 19, anyone could submit ideas for landscape art in Almere. No fewer than 41 creators from Almere, Flevoland, the rest of the Netherlands, and even Belgium submitted proposals. In early June 2025, the professional jury – interim director Tessa Haan (Jij bent M.), Martine van Kampen (director of Land Art Flevoland) and visual artist Folkert de Jong – assessed all the submissions. Ultimately, they selected six projects that will be part of a special land art route in Almere on Sunday, September 7.
The jury was unanimously impressed by the diversity and high quality of the submissions. The selected artworks reflect the zeitgeist surrounding land art and ecology: young creators explore sustainability with a fresh perspective and push the boundaries of the genre. Selected creators and works:
• Iris Hagel (1996, NL) | Moderne Fossielen / Modern Fossils (working title)
• Yawen Fu (1996, CN) | A Brief History of an Untitled Species
• Joakim Derlow (1990, SE) | Sub-Surface Survey – Flevoland
• Jet Leopold (1996, NL) | Fresh Eyes
• James Notin (1995, NG) | Where Are the Seas?
• Joana Velu (1993, NL/BR) | Landschapsbriecen / Landscape Letters (working title)
In addition, artists have been selected from the Netherlands and abroad – although the selected artists all live and work in the Netherlands.
The selection shows a cross-section of the contemporary art scene, with each of the six artists showcasing a different aspect of ‘land art’. The selected artists will receive a fee to realise their idea as a temporary artwork, performance or installation on Sunday 7 September. They will be guided by the jury members and the Jij bent M. organisation.
Open Call Land Art in the City
With the Open Call, Jij bent M. and Land Art Lives wanted to challenge young, new creators to use the city of Almere as a stage for presenting a contemporary landscape art project. This could be a presentation of research, a performance, or a temporary artwork. On Sunday, September 7, the results will together form a temporary land art route in the city of Almere. This will bring the public in Almere and beyond into contact with contemporary art forms in the city.
