Variants (2022)

Pierre Huyghe

Someone who was clearly influenced by the landscape and conceptual “roots” of land art, but has also given it his own form, is French artist Pierre Huyghe. Huyghe works a lot with film, turning his outdoor installations into strange places where obscure, narrative things happen. The work Variants is located on a small island in Kristefos sculpture park (Norway). Huyghe had the island 3D scanned and introduced into the digital “point cloud” an algorithm that makes adjustments according to its own logic. The changing 3D scan is displayed on a large LED screen on the island - and sometimes the algorithmic changes are implemented on the real island. This creates a situation where nature and simulation merge, and it is completely unclear what is fact and what is fiction.
