Looking back on: From Dawn till Dusk
Comments from online viewers and stills from the livestream
a unique online event in which the only two surviving landscape artworks by American artist Robert Smithson (1938-1973) will be on live view simultaneously: the iconic Spiral Jetty (1970) in Utah in the United States and Broken Circle/Spiral Hill (1971) in Emmen, the Netherlands. This livestream is part of the international conference Land Art Lives.
From Dawn till Dusk: an online encounter between two earthworks by Robert Smithson took place on September 10, 2024 from 2 p.m. - 9.30 p.m. During this unique online event, the only two remaining earthworks by American artist Robert Smithson (1938-1973) could be seen live at the same time: the iconic Spiral Jetty (1970) in Utah in the United States and Broken Circle/Spiral Hill (1971) in Emmen, the Netherlands. The online connection is part of the pre-program of the international conference Land Art Lives.
From Dawn till Dusk was a special, and for some viewers even an emotional, experience. Below we publish some reactions from online visitors. During the day hundreds of people watched online two artworks on two different continents. The weather and sunrise in Utah was beautiful. Unfortunately the strong wind, and later driving rain, played tricks on the team in Emmen. Below is the program of the day and some stills from the livestream. We will add more images later.
You should have been there and other reactions from viewers:
“I'm crying my eyes out that this worked out.”
“Although the originally red-colored salt lake is dry, the ever-changing colors in this landscape are striking. And in Emmen, the experience is also surprising because of the birds we constantly hear. A whole new experience of these works of art, which most of us will know from photographs.”
“I never thought that a digital live connection between two artworks would do so much. The ever-changing images, the readings from Smithson's work, his thoughts so current, the wonderful diary entries by musician and fan Lee Ranaldo.... Kudos to the teams at both venues who made this possible.”
“It was a moving experience. Had the livestream on the whole time. I imagined myself in Utah. What an experience! Next time walk into the artwork with the camera. Then I will be there again. Thanks”
"Today was such a special event, and my thanks are enormous to everyone. I know the weather was not bending to our will, but this is the very nature of Land art – and somehow the day became all the more special because of this.
"Two works that changed my life! I did my thesis on them in college. Thank you for doing this, it gave me SO MUCH JOY"
"Thank you for all the good work you are doing for this important legacy. As a Utah native (now living in Berlin), I appreciate it so much."
